SIR COLIN MARSHALL VISITS FULLER'S TO CHECK OUT THE LONDON PRIDE
After extensive competitive tastings last year, British Airways chose Fuller's London Pride to serve to its in-flight passengers worldwide. Anthony Fuller who knows Sir Cohn through his work with the CBI took the British Airways Chairman on a tour of the brewery taking time to explain the different processes along the way. Sir Colin told Fuller's directors over lunch that London Pride was very popular in First Class, Club as well as World Traveller on the airline.
Inchcape blames RVs for £78 million dive
INCHAPE has announced a £78 million slump in annual pre-tax profits, with part of the drop blamed on the current dive in residual values affecting its leasing division. The company made a pre-tax profit of £106.1 million to the end of December 1998 (1997: £184.1 million) on turnover down 17% to £5,506.4 million (1997: £6,650.9 million). But this year exceptional charges of £403.7 million - caused by a write-off of goodwill and lower asset valuations on businesses sold during the year - resulted in a final loss before tax of £297.6 million.
It warned business could slump further this year, but is committed to refocusing the group's operations on motoring. A reduced shareholding in Toyota GB accounts for £20.3 million of the drop in pre-tax profits and around half the fall in turnover.
Profits at Kenning Leaseline and Mann Egerton Vehicle Contracts are down on last year, the company reported, although it would not release separate accounts for the firms. Overall, the motoring division saw operating profits fall 12% to £115.9 million (1997: £131.7 million), but the firm says nearly half the decline was down to the strength of Sterling affecting the conversion of profits from abroad.

ECONOMIC INSTRUMENTS TO IMPROVE INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL
ENERGY USE - CONSULTATION PAPER ISSUED
A consultation paper on the possible use of economic instruments to improve the industrial and
commercial use of energy and help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions was published today by
the Government Task Force on the Industrial Use of Energy.
Sir Colin Marshall, Chairman of the Task Force, said:
"There is a need for industry and commerce to make a contribution towards tackling
climate change, and it is important that we seek views on the options available to us. We
have issued this consultation paper with the intention of reaching the greatest possible
audience. I hope that it will attract a wide response."
The paper seeks views on the practicality and potential cost effectiveness of different economic
instruments. The two leading options considered are a tax on the use of energy by the industrial
and commercial sector, or a trading scheme in energy or carbon emissions. There would be many
practical issues to resolve on either approach.
The Task Force was set up by the Chancellor in the March Budget. At the Kyoto Conference
last year the European Union committed itself to a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases
of 8% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012. The UK and other member states are currently
negotiating what legal commitments they will take on as their share of the EU target. The UK
also has its own domestic aim of a 20% cut in carbon dioxide emissions on 1990 levels by 2010.
These are challenging aspirations. All sectors of society will need to play a part in meeting them.
That will include the industrial and commercial sector.

Pan-European Students Design A Flight Training System
Euroavia, the European association of aerospace students has teamed up with British Aerospace, Europe's leading aerospace and defence company, to offer students a unique challenge.
Terry Morgan, British Aerospace's Group HR Director explains the company's commitment to the workshop. "In today's global markets, the European aerospace and defence industries depend on effective multinational teams. At British Aerospace, we are proud that with our experience of working in international partnerships, we are able to support Euroavia on this challenging project to help create the next generation of aerospace professionals."
Euroavia promotes understanding and cooperation in European aerospace, giving international students the opportunity to meet and learn from each other. The design workshop simulates a realistic multinational working environment, giving students practical experience by applying their scientific, managerial and technical skills in a global business setting.
The selected students from technical and scientific universities across Europe, will take part in the workshop at Kirkham Grammar School, near Warton in (insert Hesketh Banks)Preston(across the river Dougy from West Gate Farm), Lancashire, England, from July 26th to August 13th, with day to day support from tutors from British Aerospace and sponsor companies.
Building on the success of previous events, the workshop will push students' intellectual abilities, managerial skills, and stamina to the limit. David Marshall from the Society of British Aerospace Companies says, `The real value of the workshop lies in the teamwork across disciplines and nationalities. We can only hope that students of this calibre will choose to join the industry.'

Hugh Walsh of Walsh Transport describesPLATO as "a springboard to bounce ideas off".
With such positive feedback coming from the great majority of the participants, PLATO North Dublin’s Steering Committee, chaired by Tony Prendergast of Guinness, is currently considering how best to ensure that the benefit of the PLATO experience is spread to a much wider population of small businesses in the north Dublin area. New sites sought
THE DIXON Group is on the look out for suitable sites for new Currys and PC World outlets - ideally around 20,000 sq ft each. ``The existing outlets in Blanchardstown are trading extremely well and have encouraged the group to seek more space in the Dublin area,'' comments property advisor Fintan Tierney of Lambert Smith Hampton. ``The sites, however, must have good profile, with access to the main arterial routes in and around Dublin.''

BT strikes mobile deal with Telenor
BY CHRIS AYRES
BRITISH TELECOM yesterday agreed to take full control ofEsat Digifone, the mobile phone subsidiary of Ireland's Esat Telecom, in an "amicable" £770 million deal with Norway's Telenor.
The deal follows BT's £1.5 billion agreed takeover of Esat Telecom on Tuesday. That deal trumped a £1.2 billion offer from Telenor, which holds a 49.5 per cent stake in Digifone, one of Esat's most valuable assets. The deal threatened to sour BT's relationship with the state-owned Norwegian company.
Under yesterday's deal, BT has given Telenor the right to exchange its stake in Digifone for a 33 per cent stake in Esat. Telenor will have the right to increase this stake to 49.9 per cent for £390 million. BT will retain rights of control and the right to appoint Esat's chairman. Otherwise, Telenor can simply sell its stake in ESAT Digifone to BT for £770 million.
Tormod Hermansen, Telenor's chief executive, said: "We have achieved our objective of being able to extend our strong position in Ireland and we are delighted to be working with BT to achieve this." BT shares rose 58p to £12.87.

BT announced Wednesday an electronic catalogue system to allow its small to medium-sized business customers to enter the e-commerce arena.
The service -- BT StoreCentre -- has been developed by INTEL and allows users to build an online store or incorporate one into an existing Web site. It displays up to 3,000 products and guides online shoppers through the purchasing process. BT will offer real-time credit card transaction processing. Companies will be charged £456 a year for the service.
BRITISH TELECOM spokesman David Marshall hopes the system will allow smaller businesses to compete on a level footing with the big, technical savvy firms.
